Every year, thousands of birds all over the world set out on an amazing migratory journeys to escape from the bad winter conditions and to spend this period in regions with better weather. The flyways that link the breeding areas to wintering areas cross through places that have a great interest for the conservation of migratory birds. Therefore, it is very important know which are these flyways and which areas they preferably use during migration.

In their lines of research, the objective of the Urdaibai Bird Center is to know in detail the flyways of the species that, at some time along the year, are in our region. It is done a special emphasis in the species that have interest for the conservation and management, as it is the case of the Woodcock.

The Woodcock is a very coveted hunting species along and across Europe by hunters. The correct management of this nightlife species, that is closely linked to our forests and meadows, consist of know where they come from and where the specimens that come from north Europe and spend the winter in our latitudes go. With that aim, the Urdaibai Bird Center has marked two Woodcocks with PTT transmitters during the winter of 2013. These transmitters communicate with us through satellite and allow us to know which flyways they use, where they stop during migration and as far they go these tireless travelers to breed.
