Phylloscopus collybita

During the ringing session held in the 3th of December in a reed bed of Kortezubi within the constant effort sites scheme that runs all year around, apart from common species such as Cetti´s Warbler (Cettia cetti), Robin (Erithacus rubecula), Blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus), Winter wren (troglodytes troglodytes),  Firecrest (Regulus ignicapilla) and winter most representatives as Reed bunting (Emberiza schoeniclus) and Penduline tit (Remiz pendulinus), it had been an unusual capture of Common chiffchaffs (Phylloscopus collybita) of up to 51 individuals.

The Common chiffchaff, a specie that breeds in Europe and the most template area of Northern Asia, is a mostly migratory bird that winters in the Southern and Western Europe, Southern Asia and Northern Africa. Therefore, during cold months is usual to find Chiffchaffs wintering in Urdaibai. However, the amount of individuals ringed have been so high comparing with other times. Thus, will be interesting to get to know the development of the following ringing sessions in order to determine whether all these birds are wintering in Urdaibai for some reason or if a punctual sedimentation population has been joined to the usual wintering birds, as a result of bad weather conditions that enable them to reach their wintering areas.
