There is so much to celebrate at Urdaibai Bird Center. Swallows are diving over the water, two pairs of black-winged kites are breeding in the marsh, and ospreys are visiting frequently. We have also spotted several purple herons and a squacco heron recently. We invite you to enjoy all this and much more with us on World Migratory Bird Day 2026, which we will celebrate on Sunday, May 10th.

From 10:00 to 12:00, visitors will be able to enjoy a scientific bird ringing demonstration for which no registration is required. In addition, entry to the center will be free from 10:00 to 18:00.

This year, we are not only celebrating birds, but also the incredible efforts people are making to help protect them. The theme for World Migratory Bird Day 2026 is "Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter!", highlighting the vital role of community and citizen science in the conservation of migratory birds.

The 2026 campaign shines a spotlight on people-driven initiatives that are essential for bird conservation and research. Around the world, individuals, communities, and organisations are helping to build the knowledge needed to better protect migratory birds across borders and flyways.
For this reason, we would like to recognise the important work of Urdaibai Eraztuntze Taldea in the field of scientific bird ringing..

Made up of highly skilled bird ringers and trainees, the group has been working tirelessly since 2002 to provide valuable data on bird populations. During the bird ringing session, visitors will have the opportunity to learn more about their essential contribution to bird conservation.

Join us on World Migratory Bird Day to raise awareness about migratory birds, the threats they face, and the need to protect them and their habitats wherever they travel. Let's protect migratory birds across countries, flyways, and seasons. Every bird counts — and every observation matters.
