Wetland habitats are clearly close to hearts of many. On Febrary 1st, World Wetlands Day, we had exceptionally high number of visitors, each and every one eager to observe the birds and experience the habitat in all its winter glory. Amongst the hundreds that came to celebrate the day were seniors, families with children and groups of friends. There are no boundaries to being a nature lover.
Of course, nature did not disappoint. There were blue skies after weeks of rain and the marsh was splendid. Perched high above the water on his branch was the osprey that has been present in Orueta for over a week now. It was a great chance for our visitors to enjoys views of this magnificent bird of prey and the children were especially impressed.
The flamingoes were also a delight for all, as were the pintails, widgeons and a shelduck.
Another gem present in the wetland was a pair of black-winged kites, beautiful white birds of prey with completely red eyes.
The pleasant weather also allowed us to put on our scientific ringing demonstration and our guests learnt how this techniques help in the conservation of habitatsand bird populations. Goldfinches, chaffinches, great tits and buetits were ringed. We would like to thank all who came on this special day. Wetland are in the hearts of us all.
