Migracion-de-aves-Seguimiento-via-sateliteSatellite- trackiing Osprey project

3O "Berto" Monitoring

On the 16th April 2010, one Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) ringed in 2008 with the 3O colour-ring, became the first satellite-tracked bird of Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. This Osprey was chosen for this matter because he was ringed when it was an adult in 2008, and he has used Urdaibai like stop-over in all the migrations from this moment, so it was possible to follow his movements by the Reserve. Moreover, due to his age, he was supposed to be a breeding bird and for this reason, to go back right to the nesting area in the North of Europe.

This project was developed by the Osprey research-team consisted of Urdaibai Bird Center, Iñigo Zuberogoitia / Icarus E. M. & SEAR and the Satellite Tag was assigned by TRAGSA and FAPAS.

9th May

The satellite stopped sending information about this bird, but it is not clear if this happends because a bad operation of the device or because something happened to 3O Osprey.

4th May

This day the Osprey arrived at the nesting area, where he has stayed from this moment and has been moving no more than 5 km for fishing and establishing the territory. From this moment there will no be more detailed movement for ensuring the security of the nest, so this is the complete migration route tracked from Urdaibai to Sweden.

3th May

2nd May

He stayed almost the whole day and night in the same lake, where he arrived the previous day. He only moved from this area 4 km away.

1st May

He made a flight of 82 km until the Backsjon Lake and after that, he stayed in one of the numerous little lakes in the area all the evening until the following day.

30th April

He traveled 443 km across Sweden and stopped at the Ransjon River close to the Sanfjallets National Park.

29th April

He went on to the North and after a flight of 351km he arrived at the Southernmost part of Sweden.

28th April

He passed by the Hemmelsdorfer See in the morning and after that, he followed the path to Denmark. He travelled for 208 km and stayed that night in the Sonderskov Molle (“little lake”).

27th April

26th April

He made a northeast travel across Germany flying for 136km and arriving at the evening to the flooded gravel pit of Oldendorf.

25th April

He crossed Belgium and went into Germany, 371km away, until he stopped in the Naturpark Nordlicher Teutoburger Wald (http://www.naturpark-terravita.de/) .

 24th April

He took the northern direction and after a flight of 324km he finished the day in the frontier between France and Belgium, in the meander of the Meuse River( photo: Naamsvermelding vereist)

23th April

He traveled 190km across France and passed the night in a forest of the Natural Park of Morvan (www.parcdumorvan.org) (photo Donar Reiskoffer)

22th April

He took off at 6h and after traveling 265km, he visited the Creuse river close to Aubusson and stayed in this area until the next day (photo Havang (nl), 2009)

21st April

His last movement in Urdaibai Natural Reserve was at 10h and after that, the first point that he visited was the Oria River in Gipuzkoa. After flying 233 km from the beginning, he stopped at 18h close to the river Ciron (tributary of Garonne).

From 17th to 20th April

He stayed those four days without moving from a little area (690 m length). There, he was watched fishing several times what was very normal because he arrived to Urdaibai low-weighted and he needed to get the reserves for coming back to the nesting area.

16th April

The bird was released close to the 14h (WPT 0) and he went out of the marshes 3km away. He came back to his favorite perches, where he could rest or fish, by the 18h. He stayed in a length of 250 m for the rest of the day.
