Gernika Stork Pair Evicted

One of the pairs of storks in Urdaibai had chosen to build their nest on the steeple of Andra Mari Church in Gernika. However, yesterday was a sad day for the couple. A number of people were seen carrying out work to remove the nest and therefore make it impossible for the storks to complete their biological cycle.

In many areas of the peninsula, storks behave gregariously and build their nests together on historical buildings and churches. The numbers of nests cause controversy and they are often removed.

The first in nest Urdaibai - Atxaga, Forua. 

In Urdaibai, the situation is totally different as storks behave territorially in this area. There is less food available for them so they do not tolerate the presence of other individuals. Therefore, it is quite unlikely that large numbers of nests will be built on churches like Andra Mari.

The storks in Urdaibai are an attractive addition to the area in terms of nature and environmental education.

It is important to remember that this species is protected and it is illegal to damage their nests or other areas of reproduction.
