- URDAIBAI RESERVE - This weekend the Urdaibai Bird Center took part in the clean-up campaign in the Urdaibai Marshes. The Campaign, Zero Plastic Urdaibai, was organized by the Board of Trustees of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve and by The Diputacion of Biscay. Working together, members of the Bird Center and Izaro Sub collected plastic in the upper area of the marsh between Gautegiz Arteaga and Kortezubi. Volunteers were divided into 5 small groups. Everything was done to guarantee that the least possible impact was made upon the fragile ecosystem. At this time of year many birds, including the yellow wagtail, are breeding in the marsh and ensuring that they were not disturbed in any way was equal in importance to the collection of the plastic waste. Wearing gloves and carrying hessian sacks the volunteers spent two hours collecting anything from bottles, chairs, fridges, cans and even a sofa and a ladder. Despite being saddened by the terrible amount of rubbish in the marsh, volunteers worked hard and cheerfully. A great job was done! Thank you to everyone involved. |
