A lecture on the Osprey for students, parents and teachers of Urretxindorra and Montorre schools

On Saturday, September 21st, it was held an outreach session about the Osprey recovery project in Urdaibai, promoted by the Regional Government of Bizkaia and the Basque Government, with the participation of two schools, Montorre (Gautegiz Arteaga) and Urretxindorra (Muxika). During this session the Urdaibai Bird Center gave a lecture on the recovery project for parents, students and teachers of both schools. The students also shown the works they have been carrying out about the Osprey since last year.

These works have made possible to create a network through which students share information and experiences with schools of different countries, that are connected by the flyway of this majestic bird. Currently, they are working with the Scottish school of Logie and shortly, they could get in touch with another school in Gambia or in Senegal, linking like this, the shared wishes of students and above all teachers. This strong link personified in the Osprey, motivates students and their families to learn different subjects and it also sensitizes society about the necessity to conserve birds, which as in the case of the Osprey, it is essential for the Osprey to be able to breed in Urdaibai someday.

26 families of both schools attended to the lecture

The session was organized to say goodbye to the last Ospreys bred under the care of technicians and experts of the Urdaibai Bird Center. In fact, the last three Ospreys left Urdaibai the same day towards Africa and they set out on a journey full of dangers and obstacles that they will overcome in order to come back to breed here in at least 3 years. The last event of this celebration was a bird watching session of the marshes from the neighbourhood of Kanala, and they paid special attention to the observation of the Osprey, where participants enjoyed watching several species.
