The Regional Government of Bizkaia and Aranzadi Society of Sciences have signed a new agreement in order to promote activities of environmental education and participation in the Urdaibai Bird Center

The Regional Government of Bizkaia, through the Environmental Department, will support and finance the development of environmental education activities in the Center during 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016, with an amount of 800.000 Euros, divided in 200.000 Euros per year.

Urdaibai Bird Center and wetlands of Gautegiz Arteaga

Urdaibai Bird Center (located in Gautegiz Arteaga) is administered by the Aranzadi Society of Sciences, being currently one of the most important bird migration research centers in Europe with facilities that combine research and spreading, everything supported by new technologies.

Guided visits for public

One of the scientific and educative values of the Center is the knowledge and documentation that it has about bird migration, giving importance to both migrant birds and resident species.

One of main functions of Urdaibai Bird Center is to provide an important  added value to research works that are developing in the Center. This value is based on the adaptation of the information obtained in different research projects, for its correct transfer to a understandable level for different segments of society and in accordance with the different levels of comprehension of the public who come to the Center.

Visits with schools

In order to promote the environmental education and participation from the world of birds and the natural heritage that has the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, the Center will develop the following programmes:

- Environmental education, which includes visits to the Center, even in school period as in holidays and summer time.

- Participation and environmental volunteering.

- Introduction to ornithology.

- Census Training and scientific ringing.

- Elaboration of an ornithological yearbook as a tool for environmental and ornithological spreading of Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve values.

In this way, this programme will cover 4 years of educational activities, showing in a didactic way the progress in our researches and knowledge of birds in Urdaibai.
