"Montorre" Osprey (P6)

Biography

Montorre”  is a female born in the tiny village of Kinbrace, in the county of Sutherland, in the Highlands of the North of Scotland. It had been taken from its nest on the 5st of July when he was 4 or 5 weeks old and 1500 g weight. Its identification ring is P6.

* This bird has been  supported by Eskola-txiki Montorre of Gautegiz Arteaga, and they have decided to put their name to the osprey. The students of Montorre have been doing with Urdaibai Bird Center the project Hegazti Eskola for several years. Through this project, they have known the birds around them, and go into detail about the curricular subjects helped by the incentive of the world of birds. During this year, the project Osprey migration linking communities has help them to learn about ospreys and share experiences with students of Scotland and Gambia.

November 25th - NO NEWS OF MONTORRE

We received the last news of Montorre almost one month ago and we still don't receive any signal from her transmitter. But don't worry! Because it doesn't mean that something has happened to our young eagle, it could be that just the transmitter doesn't work properly.

Montorre's journey until her location was lost

Anyway, we remind you that Montorre could still be identify thanks to the PVC yellow ring she has with P6 code, and in could be that somebody could recognize her from a distance and send us the news.

Therefore, we keep waiting news and be sure that we will notify you as soon as we receive it. For the moment, we don't have any information, so we will not update the tracking of Montorre.

But don't get discouraged, because who knows, maybe in two years we would see her again among us in the marshes of Urdaibai.

Good luck!

September 30th - IN THE RESERVOIR OF MOULAY YOUSSEF

The last news about Montorre were from September 30th. She is close to Timnoutine, a village located in the edge of the Moulay Youssef reservoir, in the east of the magical city of Marrakech.

As you already know, the transmitter of Montorre has some problems from the beginning. For this reason, we are processing with the company who has provided the data, Argos, in order to solve the problem, and to show you where our osprey is exactly every day.

For the moment, we can tell you that Montorre has passed between the cities of Casablanca and Rabat, and the 26th at 16.00 pm se was flying at a 960m of height in the east of the Al Massira reservoir and in the south of the El Borouj town. Following her way to the south, she has flown over several towns and farmlands until she has stopped on a tree in the south of Oulad Aarade.

The 27th she flew again to the southeast and she has passed some villages and cooperatives as Ouled Maazouze. At 9.00 am she was on a tree close to the edge of the Rocade's canal.

Finally, we have just received the data corresponding to her journey along the Iberian Peninsula, which we hadn't received yet. We could see that she took the western route, crossing the provinces of Burgos, Valladolid, Segovia, Toledo and Extremadura before she arrived in the south of Portugal.

September 24-25th - FROM ALGARVE TO MOROCCO

After have lost her track, we know that Montorre is already flying over the Algarve in Portugal and that she has arrived in the city of Faro. There, she has recharged her battery in the Formosa river, one of the most important marsh in the south of the peninsula. There are some lagoons; with mazes of canals, islands, wetlands and sandy areas that extend along 60 km, it is a Natural Park because of its great ecological value, including its importance for migratory birds.

From this place, our young osprey has to make an important decision: to continue along the edge of the coast or to cross directly the sea to reach Africa. The first option seems more logical and safer, because the second one, entails to be at the mercy of the east winds that could sweep her away to the Atlantic Ocean, where many raptors die every year trying to cross to Africa.

After a tense wait due to a problem in the reception of satellite signal, finally we have known that she has taken the most risky decision: she has started to cross the sea!!! At midday she was flying at mid way, at more or less 40 km/h. Fortunately, winds were on her side and she has arrived safe and sound in Rabat, Morocco.

Afterwards, she has gone to the west, making some stops over on the lands of baseleved plain of Alentejo and has stopped between the olive groves and farm lands at 19:00h for resting some hours.

This place is few kilometers away from the reservoir of Alqueva, one of the biggest continental water mass of Europe. In this place it has been carried out a Recovery Project of the Osprey similar to the one of Urdaibai since 2011.
