Osprey (33)

Another osprey from the project returns to Urdaibai

- URDAIBAI RESERVE - Thanks to photo trapping we now know that a new osprey has returned to Urdaibai this week. Released in 2015, this male osprey carries a yellow ring with the inscription 33. As a result, the total number of ospreys observed in Urdaibai and the surrounding areas is now 6. All of these birds are males.

It is much more common for males to return to their birthplace (philopatry) than it is for females. Males choose the territory whilst females are responsible for dispersing the genes, thus reducing the risk of endogamy. In order to best aid the re-colonization of the area, a greater of number males were released during the first years of the project. However, females will make up the vast majority of ospreys brought from Scotland to be released here this year, the final year of the project.
