World Migratory Bird Day is celebrated in nature centres all along the bird migration route. This year the campaign will focus on the theme of water and its importance for migratory birds.

Water is fundamental to life on our planet. The vast majority of migratory birds depend on aquatic ecosystems during their life cycles.

Inland and coastal wetlands, rivers, lakes, streams, marshes and ponds are vital for the birds for feeding, drinking or nesting, and also as places to rest and refuel during their long journeys.

Unfortunately, aquatic ecosystems are increasingly under threat around the world and so are the migratory birds that depend on them. Increasing human demand for water, as well as pollution and climate change, are having a direct impact on the availability of clean water and the conservation status of many migratory birds.

Water sustains life in Urdaibai and looking after it it is essential. The activities organised by the World Migratory Bird Day aim to raise awareness of the importance of this wonderful resouce on which we all depend.
