World Bird Day 2022

Tuesday, 27 September 2022 15:02

wpposter3pngIn October, 2022 individuals and organizations all around the globe will be celebrating World Bird Day and World Migratory Bird Day. This year the campaign aims to raise awareness about light pollution and its effect on migratory birds

Artificial light is increasing globally by around 2 per cent per year and it is known to have a negative impact on many bird species. Light pollution can cause migratory birds to become disoriented when they fly at night, and this can result in collisions with buildings. Their biological clocks may also be affected and their ability to undertake long-distance migrations reduced

However, solutions to light pollution are available. More and more cities in the world are taking measures to dim building lights during migration phases in spring and autumn.

The more we unite and communicate, the more can be done to help migratory birds.

At the Urdaibai Bird center we will be celebrating on October the 1st.

-The Center will be open from 11:00 to 19:00. Visitors will have free entry and they will be able to enjoy using the scopes in our observatory. Many migratory birds such as ospreys are passing through this natural haven on their way south. Others are here to spend the winter. One which is especially close to our hearts has just arrived. Muxar, the opsrey which winters in Urdaibai, is back! It´s great to see him catching fish, preening himself or sleeping in his favourite tree tree near the Center.

We have also been observing and monitoring large flocks of spoonbills that have been stopping off to rest in the Urdaibai Marshes. These incredible birds are on their way to countries such as Mauritania. We are collaborating with Dutch and French groups to follow the progress of many individuals.

Although the Urdaibai Bird Center closes at 19:00 you can carry on enjoying the wildlife. Night time brings incredible opportunities to observe the fauna on our live cams in the marsh. Spot spoonbills feeding in the dark, wild boars crossing the marsh and bats flitting across the sky.

As winter is coming and the days are getting colder we´ll be offering our visitors the chance to participate in a draw. The prizes are some cozy Bird Center sweatshirts with a great osprey design..

Why not become part of the global community uniting to protect birds and their habitats! Its an amazing world!
