Live streaming on the wildlife in Urdaibai reaches 50 000 homes

The incredible audience ratings have come as a great surprise to us. It is clear that Urdaibai Bird Center´s live broadcasts on nature and birds are providing real therapy for many families in the Basque Country, the Spanish State and the rest of the world,

The majority of visits come from the areas which have been hardest hit by the pandemic. Barcelona is one such example. Of particular note is the number of people from Madrid who have been avidly watching what is happening in this little corner of the Basque Country.

Hundreds of messages of thanks are being expressed on the chat where visitors interact. People are extremely grateful for this opportunity to disconnect from their places of confinement and be transported to the idyllic natural environment of Urdaibai.

In addition to this, many schools, the majority of which are in Euskadi, are using the platform to teach subjects such as biology. A window on this incomparable setting is providing them with an excellent resource.

In order to carry out this pioneering initiative, all the Urdaibai Bird Center staff are working from home. They list the birds they see from the windows and balconies of their homes in Urdaibai and these are uploaded onto online platforms. In addition, they compile detailed weather reports. The highlighy is the high-resolution webcam located in front of the Urdaibai Bird Center. This camera is operational 24/7 and is remote controlled. Spectacular images, the sound of nature in real time and the commentary of an expert make this new initiative a magical experience.

Everyday there are surprises. Migration is underway and birds are heading north from Africa. Just a few of the delights that have been seen in the marsh are ospreys, the elusive imperial heron and the beautiful black stork

Incredible though it may seem, live commentary on wildlife is replacing live commentary on football in many homes. The birds have what we all crave most ... freedom!
