Scarecrow-birds

 

 

 

 

The forest guards of the Council of Biscay  let us know an unpleasant fact that is happening in some areas of the rural environment .

 

Some  birds, after being shot, had been found hanged and showed off like a scarecrow on gardens and fields, with the aim of intimidating the birds not to approach the orchards. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The last bird found like a scarecrow was a Great Spotted Woodpecker, Dendrocopos major

 

 

 

 

 

This practice is, not only is forbidden by different laws on animal protection but also completely useless for getting the desired objective, i.e. it does not work for the intimidation of birds because they get used very fast to the presence of the carcass of another birds.

 

Anyway, these are isolated facts, because most of the orchards has the usual scarecrows that are a part of our traditional landscape.
