A few days ago the swans were spotted behaving a little unusually in the freshwater area of the Orueta marsh. They appeared to be mimicking each other and swimming very close together. They were courting. We continued to observe them and suddenly they began to mate, an amazing sight. Last year we also observed them mating, but it was much later in the season, at the beginning of April.
It appears that the pair have chosen the same nest site as last year and the male has been seen moving material at the location. They did not succeed in raising any chicks in 2023 so we hope they will be luckier this year.
We have been working hard to improve conditions for breeding birds in the Gautegiz Arteaga marshes. These improvements have been done within the framework of our Next Generation Recovery Project, financed by the European Union in collaboration with the Basque Government. As the season goes on, we will be monitoring the progress of the different breeding birds and keeping you up to date.
Come and enjoy this marvellous time of year in the Urdaibai wetlands. Nature always surpises!
