The Urdaibai Bird Center is just like an airport. Birds come in to land from many different places and whilst some stay, others eat, rest and then depart again. Who knows where they are going! Iceland? Mauritania? Scotland?

It's not only the birds that arrive from far off places. Whilst most of our foreign visitors are from France, The Netherlands, Belgium or the UK they also come from as far afield as the USA, India, Australia or Colombia. What a range of languages are spoken by all these people!

Until now our audio guides have been available in Basque, Spanish, Catalan, English, German and French. Thanks to the collaboration of our friend Brigitte Ibens, we have just added a new language - Dutch.

We have a very strong connection to the Netherlands both through our visitors and also through the work we do tracking spoonbills on their migratory routes. A great example of our connection to birds and people in the Netherlands is Artemis, the Wadden Sea spoonbill which appeared in Urdaibai in March 2023. He had been ringed by our friend Petra de Goeij who is a member of the Lepelaar Werkgruppe.

We are sure that the addition of the new language will help strengthen our ties with the Netherlands and also give our visitors an improved experience. We want to share the wetland conservation message in as many languages as possible!

Finally, a big thank you to Brigitte for all her help and Welkom to all Dutch speakers.
