Wednesday February 2nd is World Wetlands Day. To celebrate we will be holding a special event on Sunday 6th February. In the morning there will be a scientific bird ringing demonstration. As places are limited, it is important to register by calling the Urdaibai Bird Center. The World Wetlands Day celebration aims to encourage the study and enjoyment of wetland areas and highlight the strategic role they play in the wintering and breeding of European waterbirds. It is the perfect moment to enjoy the Gautegiz-Arteaga wetlands in all their winter spleandour. Many birds which arrived from the distant north at the end of autumn are still will us. There are wigeons from Scandinavia, spoonbills from the Wadden Sea and waders from the far north. "Muxar" the osprey wintering in Urdaibai, is another star of these wonderful wetlands This year, the theme of the day is "Value – Manage – Restore, Love Wetlands". At the heart of this year's campaign is a call to action for wetlands. It is an appeal to invest financial, human and political capital to stop the world's wetlands disappearing and restore those we have degraded. The aim is to highlight the impact of our actions on wetlands. These fragile ecosystems are essential for biodiversity and humanity itself, since they help reduce floods, supply drinking wáter and improve water and air quality. They promote human well-being and can provide livelihoods for people. For all these reasons, Urdaibai Bird center is joining entities and organizations all over the world to promote the knowledge and conservation of wetlands on a local and global level. Urdaibai Bird Center will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. We offer visitors a magnificent opportunity to get to know the center, the Gautegiz-Arteaga wetlands and the birds that inhabit it. Come and celebrate World Wetlands Day with us! |
