"The first Ospreys hatch in Urdaibai"
Sunday, 30 May 2021 05:52 |
It was 06:14 in the morning and the long awaited moment finally arrived! Landa and Roy's first egg cracked open to reveal the first osprey on the Cantabrian coast for many years. This incredible moment was followed by another just shortly afterwards when the second chick hatched. From today The Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve has a flag species. The ospreys will help to promote habit conservation through their spectacular characteristics and media impact and, in turn, this will aid the conservation of species which are less attractive or popular. It has been a nerve wracking wait since Landa returned at the end of March. Her reunion with Roy was watched by 5000 people. She laid the first egg in April and 4000 viewers witnessed this event. Since then 20,000 viewers have been following the live action in and around the nest. Let's hope that in a few days another chick will hatch. However, we are aware that the death or loss of a chick is not uncommon in nature. In a month, the surviving chicks will be ringed in so that they will be identifiable Until then, there will be lots to see, as Landa and Roy will be bringing fish to feed their offspring. It will be a delight to see the young ospreys being fed sea bass, sea bream or mullet. Finally, we would like to say thank you to all the people who helped make this dream come true. Without the collaboration of institutions such as the Diputación de Bizkaia, alidad. |
