We can congratulate ourselves!!!  After a first failed attempt two years ago, when three couples of Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus) bred without success due to the torrential rains fallen in June 2010 that carried away the nest some days before the hatching of the eggs, we can confirm that this year a couple has been successful.

They began the courtship one month ago and after that, they built a nest on the central part of the marsh. They were continuously monitored by Urdaibai Bird Center and for this reason, it can be ensured that one pair of Black-winged Stilt, at least, has had the brood successfully.

Those chicks are nidifugous, therefore, in 3 or 4 days they disappear from the surroundings of the nest they were born.

For this reason, this is the first couple of Black-winged Stilt that is confirmed to breed in Urdaibai and on the whole Atlantic Basque Country. This fact reiterates the importance of the safety and peace that this marsh provides to the waterbirds and more over, to those species that, like the Black-winged Stilt, nest on the ground.
