It has recently been published in Munibe magazine the article entitled "Primera cita de reproducción de cigüeñuela común Himantopus himantopus L., 1758 en Urdaibai (Bizkaia)" (First breeding date of Black-winged Stilt in Urdaibai, Bizkaia) done by the Urdaibai Bird Center.

This article makes reference to the recently colonization of the Cantabrian coast by the Black-winged Stilt, having been seen the first time in 2009 in Asturias and Cantabria marshes. It confirms the first breeding date for the hole Basque coast and in particular for Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. In the same way, it is described the area of Gautegiz Arteaga marshes where nesting has happened and it is done a monitoring of the dates of nest construction, egg-laying and the growth of the three nestlings.

Finally, it is analyzed the possible reasons for this colonization, which could be due to an increased of this species in the Iberian Peninsula and of course, greatly helped by the habitat restoration and the improvements that recently have been made in those areas of the marsh.
