On 18th August we were delighted to welcome the Flight of The Osprey Group to the Urdaibai Bird Center. They are part of Conservation Without Borders the NGO headed by Sacha Dench, the celebrated conservationist.

Sacha and her team are on 10 000 km overland journey which will cross 14 countries and follow the ospreys on their migration. Their expedition will bring together UN agencies, scientists, governments and communities to address the effects of climate change and human threats to the osprey and other migratory species.

As the focus of this innovative project is the osprey, Urdaibai was an essential stop off for the team. Here to welcome them were members of the Urdaibai Bird Center staff and the director of the Urdaibai Osprey Project, Aitor Galarza.

First on the agenda was a Zoom meeting with Sacha, Aitor and Tim Mackrill from the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation.

Tim gave updates on 4K, one of four GPS tagged ospreys from the UK. News about the Urdaibai Osprey Project was also shared. Aitor explained how the project has had very positive results this year as 2 chicks have been born and ringed on the Cantabrian Coast.

We will be following the Flight of the Osprey team on their journey to Africa. Why not join us!!
