- URDAIBAI RESERVE - Two pairs of Pochards have been present in Orueta Lake throughout the spring. About a month ago there were signs that eggs had been laid and were being incubated. One of the females was no longer visible and a male could be seen circling one of the small islands in the lake.

Covered in sedges, the island and chosen nesting place is just a few metres away from the Ozollo Hide. From this excellent vantage point, both birdwatchers and staff of the Urdaibai Bird Centre have been able to follow the process of reproduction. On the 25th May the Pochard ducklings were seen for the first time. There are 5 of them.

This is the first recorded instance of a Pochard breeding in Urdaibai, which makes it of great importance for the area.

It should also be mentioned that the same has occurred in Plaiaundi (Txingudi). For the first time a pair has reproduced there.

A special thanks to Rowan Hardman for providing us with some lovely photos of the female Pochard with her young.
