Urdaibai Bird Center has begun a new project installing webcams in different points of Urdaibai, in order to see the live life and evolution of the monitored birds from home.

We open this section with two cameras placed in different farms of Urdaibai in front of the nests of two well known species in the surroundings: Barn Swallow and Black Redstart.

Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica)

The nest of the Swallows (Hirundo rustica) is located in a farm which is receiving for decades, year after year, these visitors that come from Africa for breeding.

As many farmers have said, this emblematic species is suffering a very important declining last years. It is, therefore, a kind of great interest, as its situation also indicates the conservation condition of our country sides.

The nest in question, has been occupied this spring in mid-April by a pair of Swallows who are successfully raising five healthy chicks born few days ago. This webcam gives us the opportunity to know their daily habits, how the parents feed their chicks, what they do when there is bad weather and very soon, the first flight of the young Swallows.

The nest of Black Redstarts (Phoenicurus Ochruros), also placed in a traditional farm of Gautegiz-Arteaga, is in fact, an old abandoned nest of Swallows, which a pair of Black Redstart has occupied the last three years with high reproductive success. In the images, we can see two nests, the characteristic one of the Swallows, mainly composed by mud balls and fixed to the wall; and inside of it, that of the Black Redstarts, a small cup made by small branches and leaves.

Black Redstart (Phoenicurus Ochruros)

The Black Redstart is also a very common bird in our farms, easily recognizable for its reddish tail. We must highlight that the presence of this bird in the countryside is growing up, while that of the Swallows is going down. This is because, in many cases, the Swallows' nest that had been abandoned in farms are identified by Black Redstarts as very suitable places to place their nests, as they are specialists in wall hollows.

This webcam will allow us to observe this pair of Black Redstart, which is now in his second egg-laying this year. Very soon, if they are successful, we will see the birth of their chicks.

Soon we will fit out more webcams to see in live the marsh of Orueta, in front of the Urdaibai Bird Center or for projects as "Inguruko hegaztiak".
You can visit these pair of birds as much as you want in the section called "Live webcambs" of this website.
